Deacon John G. Holthaus, 69, 892 Crescent Dr., Sidney, Ohio passed away at his residence on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 8:03 PM after an extended illness. He was born April 26, 1945 in Fort Loramie, Ohio, the son of Lawrence and Marietta (Schemmel) Holthaus. His father is deceased and his mother survives in Fort Loramie. He was married to Catherine Mertz on June 3, 1972 and she survives in Sidney along with their three children, Adam of Westerville, Ohio, Sarah Holthaus-Montana and husband Heinrich of Seattle, Washington and Drew of Sidney; six grandchildren, James Holthaus, Elijah Ashton, Lukas Holthaus, Jaiden Montana, Cohen Montana and Bentley Montana; four sisters, Karen Anthony and husband Jim of Fort Loramie, Ohio, Arlene Wissman and husband Jerry of Minster, Ohio, Sylvia Grimes and husband Joe of Piqua, Ohio and Jeanette Ranly and husband Dale of Minster, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Holthaus was a 1963 graduate of Fort Loramie High School and a 1971 graduate of the University of Dayton. He had a Masters Degree in Education with English and Special Education as his background. He taught at Fairlawn School for 2 years and Anna for 28 years. He was also a barber for many years. He was ordained a deacon in 1998 and was a deacon at Holy Angels Catholic Church where he was a member. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and he loved his Gold Wing motorcycle, but, he especially loved his job as deacon at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Rev. Dan Schmitmeyer. Burial will follow at St. Michaels Cemetery, Fort Loramie. Friends may call at Holy Angels Catholic Church on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 2-9 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Angels Catholic Church, 324 S. Ohio Ave., Sidney, Ohio 45365 or Holy Angels Elementary School, 120 E. Water St., Sidney, Ohio 45365. Envelopes will also be available at church. The family invites people to bring their favorite photos of Mr. Holthaus to the viewing. There will also be a memory book at the church for friends and family to share their favorite memories of Deacon John.
