Janis Elaine Beigel, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024, at Ohio Living Dorothy Love in Sidney, Ohio. She was born on September 6, 1937, in Oakwood, Ohio, to the late Andrew and Ruby (Bennett) Hanson. Jan attended Oakwood City Schools and The Ohio State University where she met the love of her life, the late Dr. John O. Beigel. They were married on February 7, 1959, and moved to Sidney, Ohio in 1960 to raise a family and for John to start his optometry practice, now known as Primary Eye Care.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Hanson, of San Antonio, Texas. Her younger brother, Gene Hanson, lives in Medina, Ohio.
Janis was a devoted mother of four boys: Jeff (Lorie) of Sidney; Jerry (Patty) of Dublin, Ohio; John (Lisa) of Sidney; and Joe (Cathy) of Sidney; and a cherished grandmother to Katherine and Alex (Jeff & Lorie); Olivia, Paige and Josh (Jerry & Patty); Andy and Kristin (John & Lisa); and Jessie and Eric (Joe & Cathy).
She was a loving matriarch, relentless in her efforts to ensure that her children were of good character, received good educations, plenty of physical activity, play, meaningful responsibility, and community involvement throughout their lives. She volunteered an untold number of hours supporting each of her sons in their many sports, 4-H, YMCA, school, and community service activities.
Industrious and inquisitive, Janis owned and operated a plantscaping business, marketed a high-end fashion clothing line, obtained a degree in packaging engineering, and pursued photography lessons. She spent countless hours making a difference by leading community fundraising events, volunteering for Sidney City Schools and actively promoting numerous charitable causes.
Her zest for life was evident in everything she did, from her love of theater and the arts to her passions for reading, gardening, and hosting family gatherings. She cherished the outdoors, enjoying nature and all animals, and her infectious laughter could light up a room. Her warm acceptance of everyone she met made all feel welcome in her presence. She enjoyed family summers at their Kiser Lake cabin, vacations at their place in Seabrook, SC, and frequent travel around the world. She relished her time with good friends and family.
Admired for her depth of wisdom and character, her sons consider themselves privileged to be her children and will carry her love and spirit with them all of their days. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
As she wished, private services for immediate family will be held at a later time. Condolences may be expressed to the family at Salm-McGill & Tangeman Funeral Home.
