Raymond H. Poppe, 92, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2012, at the Otterbein St. Mary's Retirement Home, 11300 Circle Dr., St. Mary's, Ohio at 2:30 PM. He was formerly of Botkins, Ohio. Raymond was born September 22, 1919,, in Clay County, Arkansas the son of August and Rosa (Leirer) Poppe and they preceded him in death. He was married to Estella Sweetman on November 23, 1946,and she passed away on October 12, 1994. Surviving are three daughters, Rose Ann Kerns and husband Brent of Jackson Center, Ohio; Linda Cregan of Beavercreek, Ohio; Betty Fogt and husband Daniel of Marysville, Ohio; four sons, Glenn Poppe of Geyer, Ohio; Dale Poppe and wife Jennifer of Botkins, Ohio; Harold Poppe of St. Mary's, Ohio and Gary Poppe and wife Tracey of Lake Dallas, Texas; one sister, Glenda Fay Williams of Swansea, Illinois and fifteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. One brother, Vermon Poppe is deceased. Raymond was employed as the mill superintendent at Botkins Grain and Feed in Botkins, Ohio for many years. He was a United States Army veteran from 1941 to 1945 and is the last known survivor of Pearl Harbor in Shelby County. He was a member of the Anna-Botkins American Legion; St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Botkins where had taught Adult Sunday School and was the past Congregational President. He had been on the Board of Public Affairs in Botkins at one time, head of Little League Baseball in Botkins, and active in dartball. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012, at 10:00 AM at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney with Rev. Robert Carter. Burial will follow at Loramie Valley Cemetery, Botkins. Friends may call at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home on Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 4-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Botkins.
