His last year in mortuary school he took a position with the Charles A. Miller Funeral Home in Cincinnati Ohio. Doug also served an Internship with the Tufts-Shildmeyer Funeral Home in Loveland Ohio as part of his graduation requirements.
After graduation from CCMS, Doug, realizing he preferred the small town funeral home life, returned to Sidney Ohio to serve his apprenticeship with his grandfather, the late William E. Salm. After passing the National and State Board examinations he became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in 1987.
